Co2 cylinder exchange SodaStream
In collaboration with SodaStream (www.sodastream.ch) Swiss Post has developed a simplified Co2 cylinder exchange system for its customers in just eight months. This unique complete solution impressed SodaStream, which then transferred its existing logistics solution from a competitor to Swiss Post. This customer centric business solution was implemented in April 2023. How Swiss Post succeeded:
From the SodaStream perspective:
- Rapid development: Quick, iterative implementation of a digital and physical logistics solution for exchanging empty cylinders for full cylinders at the private customer’s place of residence.
- No additional packaging: Delivery of full Co2 cylinders without additional packaging for shipping. Return of empty cylinders in the delivery packaging
- Direct data transfer: Transfer of the data recorded by the delivery worker to SodaStream’s ERP system within 60 minutes, resulting in a simplified billing process from SodaStream to the end customer.
- Speed: Physical handling of the exchange process within 48 hours of order receipt.
From Swiss Post’s perspective:
- Sustainable: Use of reusable containers and cylinder packs as part of daily postal deliveries.
- Digital: Digital workflow on the delivery device guides the delivery worker through all process steps.
- Scalable: The scalable solution can be implemented for other customers and markets (physical and digital activities).Reusable: Forms the basis for a genuine circular economy solution, compatible with future

The core of the solution is a digital workflow specifically developed for the delivery worker’s scanning device. The workflow makes it possible to collect unpacked cylinders from the SodaStream customer’s premises, record them digitally and transfer the data to SodaStream’s billing system. Hourly transmission of data enables SodaStream to quickly complete the customer event with invoicing. This saves SodaStream time and money and achieves a very high level of customer satisfaction. Just three months after implementation, the solution achieved the full satisfaction of all those involved with a process deviation of 1 to 2%.
The implementation by an interdisciplinary team from Swiss Post took eight months. The team held weekly alignment meetings with SodaStream and pointed out weaknesses, which were improved iteratively. The meetings enabled us to work in partnership with SodaStream. The iterative approach has been recognized by SodaStream as extremely effective and innovative.
